LORIS, SC (WMBF) – A vehicle caught fire outside of the IGA grocery store in Loris Sunday afternoon, according to Fire Chief Jerry Hardee with the Loris Volunteer Fire Department.

"We went in to the grocery store, ended up parking close to the front and went in and stayed in about 5 or 10 minutes," Rodney Stanley said.

Rodney Stanley's wife is the owner of the 2008 Pontiac Solstice that burned down to its frame Sunday. Stanley said as he and his wife were driving to the store, they noticed a smell of smoke. Stanley said after he checked under the hood and didn't see any smoke, he figured the smell was coming from the outside. That is, until they were on their way out of the grocery store.

"My wife said I smell that smoke, and I said look at your car," Stanley said.

Stanley said his wife's car was full of smoke.

"So I told her, I gotta move it. So I jumped in and I couldn't see out of any of the windows and she was hollering telling me which way to go," Stanley explained.

Stanley said moving the car while it was caught on fire may have been dangerous, but he simply did what he had to do.

"You have to think the next thing that's gonna happen if it continues. It's gonna go up in a blaze and there's so many vehicles and no telling how many kids around or some elderly person sitting in a car that can't hardly get out.  So the best thing I could do for so many people was for me to move that car," Stanley said.

The vehicle was a total loss, but luckily, no one was injured in the incident.
