Florence County gets humvees

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - The Florence County Sheriff's Office has added three new humvees to the department's lineup, to better serve the community.

The sheriff's office already had one humvee. On Thursday, it got three more from Chesterfield County.

The sheriff's office says the humvees will be used at the agency's discretion, but some people in Florence don't want them used at all.

"You could possibly be a very pro-military family and see the need for it, or you can see it as extreme,"said Kim Smith

The additions of the new humvees created a buzz not only in Florence County, but on social media sites as well. Captain Michael Nunn with the Florence County Sheriff's Office says those humvees will only be used for emergencies.

"In the event that there is a missing child or an Alzheimer's patient wonders off," said Nunn

Nunn says those vehicles will help the sheriff's office navigate quickly and more efficiently on off-road terrain, cutting down on the time it takes to reach someone in an emergency situation

"I guess if that is the case and if it's going to be used for something of that nature, if someone is missing let's do whatever we can to find them," said Cathie Sanders.

"We have the ability to use these vehicles that can go just about anywhere and deploy those assets to do what we need to do," said Nunn

For some taxpayers it's not the vehicle itself that raises concern, it's the costs of upkeep. All though we were unable to get a specific dollar amount, Captain Nunn said those costs are minimal to the county.
