Dateline shines spotlight on Ascot Estates double murder

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

It's the case that engaged the Midlands from the first details to the final moments in the courtroom, and now Dateline NBC has set its sights on the Ascot Estates double murder.

The story, titled "Mystery at Ascot Estates", looks to put the famous newsmagazine shine on the case many in the Midlands know so well.

If you don't recall, 44-year-old Tammy Jo Parker and 46-year-old Bryan Capnerhurst were found dead inside the home of Brett Parker back in April 2012.

However, the case wasn't as cut and dry as it seems.

Further intrigue was added to the case with the admission from Brett Parker that he was one of the Midlands leading gambling bookies and that Capnerhurst was one of his business partners.

Fifth Circuit Assistant Solicitor Luck Campbell said the case initially looked like self-defense with a "bizarre twist." Prosecutors spent the better part of the trial attempting to prove to the jury that Parker shot Tammy Jo multiple times and then killed Capnerhurst as he arrived at the home for a planned meeting on Friday April, 13, 2012.

The defense disagreed with that conclusion, attempting to paint a picture of a good man who was defending himself during a robbery.

However, the jury would side with the prosecution and delivery a guilty verdict against Brett. He is currently serving a life sentence.

NBC News sent producers and reporter Andrea Canning to Columbia to interview friends and family who were connected to the case.

The full report aired Friday night.
