Construction kicks off on new amenity at Market Common

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A hot spot in the Grand Strand for new shops, restaurants, and entertainment is about to add a major amenity to its roster. On Tuesday, construction crews broke ground on the latest project in the Market Common area.

There are two phases to the project. Phase one will include a club house, main pool and kiddie pool. In phase two, construction crews will add a lazy river and a spa. It's being built nearby the Barnes and Nobles parking lot.

Management for Market Common say the pool will not be open to the public. It's being paid for by an association run by the Market Common. Only a group of nearby homeowners will have access. These are people with homes in the Market Common area built by the developer, Dock Street. Fees paid by the homeowners and renters will cover the cost of maintaining the pool area and club house. Vacationers who stay at the Market Common Suites, and long-term renters will also be eligible for access to the pool area.

Homeowners seem to have mixed feelings about forking out money to use the new amenities.

"Depending on how much that is, but yeah, I would love to be having one here close," said homeowner Neil Geistra.

"There's a beach about a mile and a half that way, and if I wanted to pay for a pool, I would pay to go into a water park or something. I don't know. I'll never pay to go into a pool. That's silly, " explained Market Common resident Bentley Thurlow.

Management for Market Common says the first phase of the project should wrap up by late fall. No word on when construction of phase two will begin.
