WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – A man who was the intended target of a robbery in Felix Smith Park in Whiteville early Monday morning called 911 to report a fatal shooting.

"A lady's been shot," the man told the 911 operator. "We were walking and got robbed."

According to police, Darian Moore was arrested and charged with fatally shooting his girlfriend, 37-year-old Amy D. Sasser.

Police say Moore told them he and Sasser were planning to rob 41-year-old Curtis Lawrence, the man who called 911.

A scuffle developed when Moore confronted Lawrence. The gun fell and Moore picked it up and fired, hitting his girlfriend instead of Lawrence.

"The guy hit me and the gun went off," Lawrence explained to the 911 operator. Moore told police he thought he was shooting at Lawrence.

When asked by the 911 operator to describe who shot the gun, Lawrence said, "They call him Peanut."

Moore is charged with robbery and first-degree murder. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
