The search is on for a missing boater who was last seen in a Kershaw County river late Saturday evening.

According to Department of Natural Resources officials, a 44-year-old man and a woman were in a boat on the Wateree River when it hit a floating log around 11 p.m. Saturday.

Family members have identified the missing man as Michael Thompson.

DNR says a female boater could hear Thompson screaming after he fell out of the boat, but couldn't see him.

Officials say the woman eventually found a fisher who was also on the lake that evening and had him take her back to the spot where the boat had overturned. There were no signs of Thompson.

Thompson's family is looking for him at the Highway 1 Bridge Boat Landing in Lugoff and the Highway 378 bridge at the Richland/Sumter County line.

DNR officials are also seeking Thompson. They are using boats and aircraft to try and locate him. The water is at flood stage and is moving rapidly.
