Former Education Superintendent Jim Rex and Dr. Oscar Lovelace
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Organizers of a new political party are holding an informational meeting this week.
The public is invited to attend the American Party's meeting on Thursday at the Sheraton Hotel in Columbia.
The American Party is backed by Jim Rex, the Democrat who previously led South Carolina's state Department of Education and ran for governor in 2010. It also has support from Oscar Lovelace, a physician who sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2006.
Another meeting is scheduled for June 13 at the Congregational Church Social Hall in downtown Charleston.
On its website, the group says it wants political parties held accountable for their candidates' actions.
