HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The man transported to the hospital after holding officers at bay in a standoff outside his home has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The police standoff on Laurel Woods Drive ended when police officers set off a flash grenade and entered the home, Horry County Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Kegler said.
Officers had previously responded to an assault and attempted sexual assault complaint on Aquarius Drive at the Crystal Lakes Mobile Home Park in Myrtle Beach. Officers found the alleged female victim, but the male suspect had fled from the scene, and they began to search for him in his neighborhood on Laurel Woods Drive.
Officers heard what sounded like muffled gunshots coming from the direction of his house, Sgt. Kegler said. They set up a perimeter, and SWAT and negotiators were called in.
There was no response from the inside the home, and after about one hour and 40 minutes, officers set off a flash grenade and entered the home, Sgt. Kegler said. The suspect was found alive and was taken to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Horry County Coroner's Office has identified the man as 63-year-old Dale Omsberg. Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard says he was originally from Montana and has lived in the Grand Strand since December 2012. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
