Brushing By: Sign artists freshen up Darlington Raceway

Posted: Updated:

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - There is a reason why Darlington Raceway has been given the nickname 'The Lady in Black.' Most drivers that come to race here find that out the hard way. The markups fans can often find on the walls prove just how complex its structure is.

Yet that doesn't stop crews from making this and almost every other track on the NASCAR circuit look good. Sign artists from J.K. Motorsports arrived in Darlington late last week and began touching up logos on the walls to make everything appear in top shape for when the NASCAR nation focuses on the Track Too Tough to Tame. The job does keep them busy - for the entire month of May, their only day off will be on Mother's Day. Yet after seeing raceways from throughout the east coast, Darlington is one that stands out among the rest

"It's the second oldest track on the NASCAR circuit," said Keith Grubbs of J.K. Motorsports. "It's a great feeling knowing you're here because you know of all the great legends that have ran on here before. It's an honor to paint on the walls of where all of those guys have raced before."

The crew will finish their touch ups by tomorrow and then move on to the next assignment. But as the walls inevitably get marked up again this weekend, they will gladly come back next year.
