Food stamp eligible items to be questioned

CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Steak, seafood and special occasion cakes are all currently acceptable items for South Carolina SNAP recipients to purchase.  But the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) wants the opinion of taxpayers on what should, and should not, be included on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) list of eligible food.

DHEC will hold a public forum on Wednesday, May 2nd at Sterett Hall at the Navy Shipyard in North Charleston from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

More than 875,000 people are currently enrolled in SNAP -- a $1.4 billion per year program.

The list of eligible food items that can be purchased under SNAP includes almost all consumable products, regardless of an item's nutritional value.

According to DHEC, South Carolina now seeks to update its SNAP eligible foods list to better reflect the health needs of the state.

People unable to attend the May 2nd forum can e-mail their recommendations to or fill out an online form at:
