Moving Up: Local football stars chosen in NFL Draft

Posted: Updated:

The NFL Draft has concluded after three days, and before Saturday night ended, two area stars were selected by NFL teams, while two others signed free agent deals shortly thereafter.

Former West Florence Knight and Clemson Tiger standout Malliciah Goodman was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, with the 127th overall pick, in the fourth round. He played in 54 games in his Clemson career, recording 150 tackles, 12 sacks and causing eight fumbles.

South Carolina Gamecock and Aynor native T.J. Johnson had to wait a little bit longer, but the Cincinnati Bengals eventually gave him the call in the seventh round, with the 251st overall selection. Starting at center for USC, he has played in a school-record 53 games over his career in Columbia.

After the draft, two other Grand Strand natives signed free agent deals in order to have a shot at playing on Sundays. Former Carvers Bay Bear and Georgia defensive end Kwame Geathers signed with the San Diego Chargers, while Myrtle Beach Seahawk and Virginia Tech Hokie Bruce Taylor reached an agreement with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Clemson kicker/punter and Myrtle Beach native Spencer Benton also reached a free agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys. His 61-yard field goal his senior season against Ball State set a new Clemson and ACC record.
