Sheriff: 50 pounds of copper missing following electrocution

Posted: Updated:
BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Officials with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office say 50 pounds of copper is missing from a power sub-station where a 29-year-old man was electrocuted to death.

Capt. Ric Ollic with the sheriff's office say it appeared someone was helping Zachary Jones of Salters steal copper before he was electrocuted.

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office says around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Berkeley Electric Cooperative crews responded to a power outage in the Cainhoy area. While crews were checking one of their sub-stations, they came across a body lying in a pit around a transformer.

Authorities say they noticed that the fence had been cut in order to gain entry into the sub-station.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury says Jones was pronounced dead on the scene. The coroner's office says Jones death has been ruled accidental from electrocution.

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office are investigating this incident.
