FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A new county position has been created and filled, aimed at making Florence County Fire Department more efficient.
Fire Chief Sam Brockington has been named the Fire and Rescue Coordinator for the county. Brockington will be responsible for budget and upgrading equipment. Brockington said he is proud and ready to serve the county.
"The public expects from watching TV that they can dial 911, and in five minutes we will show up with the best trained outfit and best equipped outfit. We want to meet their expectations as much as practical," said Brockington.
Florence County Council members say this position was created, because fire services across the county were not consistent in servicing emergencies. Some issues concerning council are; longer than normal response times and equipment problems. Council members say these issues are reflective of the fire departments work ethic. Council says these issues have come out of the lack of man power and the amount of revenue each department collects.
Florence County Fire Departments have all been brought under one agency. Brockington will head that agency and meet with individual Fire Chiefs to assess the needs of their departments, and work with them to see that those needs are met.
Firefighters and council feel the addition on the new position will help all departments better serve the county.
"The Florence County Fire Coordinator is a good thing because it is a step to standardize the level of protection people get in Florence County," said Anthony Fox
On Monday, Brockington will meet with the Fire Chiefs of the county and come up with a vision for the newly created agency.
