Crews control brush fire north of Socastee

HORRY COUNTY, SC – Fire crews have gained control of the brush fire that caused a potential threat to two homes north of Socastee earlier Wednesday afternoon.

Horry County Fire Rescue officials confirmed Highway 544 was closed to traffic in both directions near Roscoe Road as crews worked to battle a brush fire that threatened two residential structures.

It has now reopened by may take some time to start flowing again at a normal pace.

The call reporting the brush fire near the intersection of Highway 544 and Cedar Lane came in at about 3:08 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

In addition to Horry County Fire Rescue, the South Carolina Forestry Commission responded with two plows and Murrells Inlet and Surfside Beach Fire also responded for mutual aid.

The fire has been controlled, but not before the flames damaged a 10X10 storage building and three boats. The cause has not yet been determined.
