MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The major traffic shift on the US 17 Bypass and SC 707/Farrow Parkway (Back Gate intersection) that was previously postponed, has begun.
One Southbound lane is shut down, and traffic is backed up past Harrelson blvd.
SCDOT says limited lane closures are in effect in the overnight hours Wednesday morning
However, all drivers are being warned about the major lane shift happening at around 8 p.m. Tuesday on the southbound lanes.
South Carolina Department of Transportation says the existing south bound lanes will shift about 100 ft. westward. Southbound drivers will actually use the future ramp lanes to the Backgate Intersection between Port Dr. and Palmetto Pointe Blvd. SCDOT crews have been prepping the site for Tuesday night's lane shift and utility crews have been getting the new traffic signals ready.
During the lane switch, crews will shut off the traffic signals and SC Highway Patrol troopers will direct traffic at the intersection. This could cause some delays at the already busy intersection. Drivers heading north and south along the Grand Strand can use Highway 31 or Kings highway. Drivers on Farrow Parkway can take Fred Nash Boulevard. SCDOT say drivers should pay close attention to the new traffic patterns and dozens of crew members on site.
