HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Drivers have been dealing with overnight road work on Highway 544 throughout the week. Crews have been laying down the final layer of asphalt to smooth out the drive. But first, drivers have to get through all the bumpy construction zones.
You may think moving around this is a hassle, but it's one you're going to have to get used to. We're driving right into the part of the year where SCDOT patches up the roads.
So drivers can plan on seeing construction projects like this one all over our area. Some of the projects lined up for this year are: 17 Business in Myrtle Beach from 3rd Avenue to Farrow Parkway, Highway 9 in Green Sea, and Highway 905 all the way to the state line.
Even though we're heading into the busier part of the year, SCDOT says it's the best time to lay down the pavement because of the warmer temps. The agency tells WMBF News the plan is to handle the work at times that will least affect drivers.
"They're going to be working at night," said Shannon Welch with SCDOT Maintenance. "And of course that's through the heavy traffic volume, so they have to do it at nighttime because there's not as much traffic and it works a bit smoother."
The paving season will last all the way through November.
