BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Police in Beaufort are investigating a report from a woman who says she was passing through town and left her purse at a restaurant with her money - a lot of money - inside it.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/ZMGumT ) the woman said the purse contained $35,000.

According to a police report, the woman and her family were moving from New Jersey to Florida when they stopped at a local restaurant for dinner on Monday.

The woman reported she left her purse behind after dinner. When she returned to the restaurant to retrieve it, she said she couldn't find it.

The investigation is continuing.
