LAKE CITY, SC (WMBF) - A clerk for the Judicial Court of Lake City was taken into custody for the embezzlement of public funds, according to the warrants from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Those warrants state 41-year-old Janice McKnight, a court clerk in Lake City, received the payment of fines that should have been deposited in the city's accounts on two different occasions, but instead kept the money for herself.

During each instance - on Sept. 16 and Dec. 27 of 2011 - she wrote the payer a receipt for the fine they paid, which were $231 and $113.30 respectively.

Then on Nov. 20, 2012, McKnight took money from the court's money box for her personal use, the warrants state. She was the only person with a key to that box.

McKnight was taken into custody Tuesday morning and released less than three hours later on a personal recognizance bond.
