SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents say a Summerville man forged divorce paperwork to convince his girlfriend he was no longer with his current wife.

SLED charged Edward Brown, 45, with one count of forgery on Friday.

Investigators say Brown obtained a copy of his divorce paper from his first marriage and changed names, dates, and the case number after scanning the document into his computer.

The goal was to make it appear to his girlfriend that he had divorced his second wife, whom he was currently with, court documents state.

Agents say the use of the forged documents took place between August 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013.

The charge is a misdemeanor and carries a penalty of up to three years in prison and/or a fine.

The First Circuit Solicitor's Office will prosecute the case.
