MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Police have taken a young mother into custody one week after she gave birth to a premature newborn that has tested positive for drugs.

This situation was reported to Myrtle Beach Police by an employee of the Department of Social Services. The incident report states DSS was contacted by Grand Strand Regional Medical Center after a baby born prematurely at 35 weeks tested positive for cocaine.

Other than the drugs in baby's system, they did not report any further complications from the premature birth. The child was immediately placed into protective custody, and a family member of the mother was given charge of the infant.

The 25-year-old mother, Harley Oddette Hendrix, was arrested one week later and charged with unlawful neglect of a child and receiving stolen goods. She is expected in court on Wednesday, April 10.
