Florence Co. seeks grant to renovate dilapidated areas

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - Dilapidated properties and garbage are being blamed as the reason some industries decide not to come to Florence County.

East Palmetto Street is considered as one of the gateways into the City of Florence. Florence County Council members say the area directly in front of the airport needs to be renovated.

"Potential business that we were trying to attract to Florence would get off the airplanes and get out of the airfield and see the dilapidated condition of the buildings and would change their mind," said Alphonso Bradley.

County Council along with members of the Florence City Council, are writing a grant which could bring $500,000 to East Palmetto Street. The Village Renaissance's Grant would allow the county to remove some of the dilapidated properties along East Palmetto.

The old Palmetto Inn is one of council's top priorities of removal.

"Actually we had a developer who wanted to do some renovations to the community and build some apartments there," Bradley continued. "In a community that hasn't had any development since we can remember. And the grant was lost by one point, and that dilapidated hotel was why they lost it."

Council members will submit the grant in October. If approved, they expect to begin work in the county at the end of next year.
