HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Tax dollars are hard at work in Horry County, as crews get set to beautify a portion of Highway 501 in the coming weeks.
Crews will be revamping a portion of the medians on Highway 501 from the Tanger Outlets south to the city limits of Myrtle Beach.

The plants added along the center medians include 85 Crepe Myrtles, 32 Sabal Palms, 126 Tea Olive bushes, 192 shrubs, and 498 decorative grasses.

The beautification project is costing a total of $85,000, and $50,000 of that is coming from the county's accommodations tax. The rest of the is from a tree mitigation fund.

Steve Marek from Wisconsin is visiting Myrtle Beach for the first time. He was traveling along 501 on Monday, and noticed the region, saying he thought it was too commercialized,  "by the looks of things I would say it could use a little uplift." Marek added that when he is  traveling he likes to see more of the nature-life of the area shown.

The Department of Transportation recently removed six Bradford Pear Trees which were once in the center medians on the highway.

John Parry of Conway thinks the removal of the trees was a great idea, "the trees were interfering with pulling in and out of businesses."

The project includes the removal of the trees, placements of new landscaping, and routine maintenance of the grass.

The beautification work is expected to be completed in the next four-to-six weeks, if the weather allows.

The Horry County Spokesperson Lisa Bourcier explains the beautification along 501 is something the county has needed to do, "there are a lot of entry ways into the beach. A lot of those need to be updated and taken care of better than what it has been." Bourcier adds entry ways all throughout the county will soon be looked at aesthetic improvement.

The bid for landscaping for the project is out and those interested can make their bid to the county by April 11.
