HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Police have taken a man into custody after a high speed chase that went up and down busy Highway 501.

That chase began when police spotted a car connected to a shoplifting complaint at the Carolina Forest Walmart. The officers who attempted to pull the man over found themselves in a high speed chase, says Horry County Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Kegler.

After driving up and down Highway 501, the suspect was stopped and arrested in the area of Kiskadee Loop in the Kiskadee Apartment Complex just off Wind Wing Boulevard.

The driver, 41-year-old Gary Cecil Chappel of Conway, is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center and charged with shoplifting, trespassing and failure to stop for a blue light.

A resident of Kiskadee Apartments told our WMBF News film crew that Chappel does live in that neighborhood, and "he's a nice guy."
