FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Florence County Trooper William A. McInville was named the SC Highway Patrol Trooper of the Year on Thursday. He was selected as the winner within a group representing 10 troops or units within the S. C. Highway Patrol, according to a release from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

"Today was a great day at the SC Department of Public Safety and a great day for the State of South Carolina when we said thank you to our heroes," said SCDPS Director Leroy Smith.

On June 3, 2012, Trooper McInville conducted a traffic stop after a vehicle went through a stop-light without stopping, nearly causing a collision. The female driver got out of the vehicle with a 2-year-old child who was not breathing.

Trooper McInvolle called for an ambulance and performed CPR on the child, who eventually spit out a piece of candy that had caused him to choke.

"I believe everyone would agree, however, that Trooper McInvolle's act of saving a child's life truly made him deserving of the top honor today," Smith continued.

Trooper McInvolle joined the Highway Patrol in January 2010, and is assigned to Dillon, Florence and Marion counties. Before joining the Highway Patrol, he worked at the Florence Police Department, the City of Florence Fire Department and the Timmonsville Rescue Squad.
