Conway could decide construction project's fate

Posted: Updated:

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Construction started on Coastal Estates almost a year and a half ago, but now the property is still unfinished and now the city of Conway has a chance to take matters into their own hands.

"I notice this construction site when I drive past it every day," said Brooke Holden. "It's just an eyesore.

In January of 2012, construction began on Coastal Estates, with promises it would be state of the art student housing, but progress quickly stopped on the project. Now, what progress was made on the site is falling apart.

Brooke stopped by the property's management office months ago, and says they told her a different story.

"She told me it was right on schedule," she said. "It would be finished by the end of the year. This was last year."

Conway City Council is now looking into the fate of the project. City Councilman Irby Koon says every construction project in the city is given a timetable, and Coastal Estates' limit has passed.

Koon says the city now has a choice to come in and tear down what structures are currently on the site, but he says the decision has yet to be voted on by city council.

Calls to Coastal Estates were not returned.
