GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A couple of large prescribed burns in the Georgetown County area may be producing smoke columns that can be seen along the Grand Strand Friday.

According to the website for the South Carolina Forestry Commission, there is a 150 acre prescribed fire on Exchange Drive, about four miles west of Brookgreen Gardens for wildlife management.

Another fire, this one 200 acres in size, has been prescribed off of Highway 701 near Plantersville for hazard reduction.

Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins says in addition to the fires prescribed by them in the Columbia area today, some private contractors may be taking advantage of the fair weather to catch up on burning they could not previously do. Hawkins says the burning season is still ongoing and a wet winter has prevented this activity.

These prescribed burns are intended to reduce the hazard in the event that a wildfire should occur in the future.
