MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A trip to the Myrtle Beach International Airport will soon be a very different experience. In exactly one week, everything will shift over from the old terminal into the new one.
The new airport entrance on Jetport Rd and Harrelson Blvd will be the only way passengers can travel in and out of the airport. The old entrance on Hwy 15 will be blocked off to traffic. Also changing up: the road in front of the old entrance will be torn up and used to create new parking spaces. Also, the parking lot on front of the old terminal will close for renovations.
Eventually all of the parking lots will shift around, airport officials say that could take a while. In the meantime, only the parking lots directly in front of the new terminal will be open starting on Tuesday.
While the airport's staff works on final details, they want to make sure passengers are prepared for all of the changes when they arrive to the new terminal. Kirk Lovell, the Myrtle Beach Airport Marketing Director, says using new kiosks efficiently will be key.
"You can now use any of the kiosks to check in to your flight. The kiosks are important because the worst thing is you stand in line and come to find out you could have used any of them," he explains. "The whole system is set up so that people can use any of them and speed up the process."
Lovell says they're just about ready to open, and over the last week, the county received the certificate of occupancy, which is a required step that shows the building is up to code. On Sunday, several Horry County officials had their first inside look during a ribbon cutting ceremony.
In preparation for the big opening next week, on Tuesday afternoon, the airport will run through operations inside the new terminal. Airport officials want to use the rehearsal to work out any possible kinks they find before next Tuesday morning.
