Last day to sign up for free credit monitoring protection for tax hacker victims

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Tick, tock. The deadline to sign up for the free Experian credit monitoring protection offered by the state is this Sunday, March 31.

Last fall, hackers accessed the social security, bank account and credit card numbers of millions of state tax payers, costing over $25 million in clean-ups.

Lawmakers are working to extend this one year of free credit monitoring the state is offering to victims. Around 1.4 million people have signed up so far, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs.

You can sign up online at www.protectmyid.com/scdor and the code to enter is scdor123, or by calling 1-866-578-5422.

Director of the South Carolina Department of Revenue, Bill Blume says the DOR data breech team will be working late hours. "They'll stay on to do whatever to make sure certain people who have not signed up, have all the help to do that."

The Experian enrollment provides a free credit report, daily credit monitoring, personal identity theft resolution, a $1 million identity theft insurance policy, and full access to personalized assistance from a trained Fraud Resolution Agent.

If you miss Sunday's deadline, or are looking for another way to protect yourself, freezing your credit account is also an option.

"Nobody can use my SSN anywhere. If I need to make a purchase, I just call the agency that company would use and have it unfrozen for a certain period of time," says Larry Cauble, who wanted extra protection.

Freezing your account is usually a free service.
