FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) –
The next six weeks will see a campaign launch, aimed towards curbing underage
drinking.
This year's campaign is titled "Don't
Let Drinking Ruin Your Prom." Students, law enforcement and other agencies have
joined the coalition aimed at alerting teens of the dangers associated with
underage drinking.
Circle Park Behavioral Services
hosted the launch of the campaign at the Florence Club House. The ad that will
soon run on T. V. screens across the Pee Dee and Grand Strand, was unveiled.
The State Highway Patrol's Sonny
Collins was one of the speakers."Recent years have shown us that almost half
the time a teenager died in a traffic fatality, it was alcohol related," Collins
announced.
The
plan is to target students on all platforms.
Courtney
Squires is one student from Johnsonville High School dedicated to passing the
message to her peers. "But what they fail to realize is when they drink and get
behind the wheel they're endangering other people's lives," Squires said.
Party patrols, parking lot patrols
and compliance checks are soon-to-come to make sure teens are not drinking
underage.
Recent studies show a drop in
alcohol use in teens. However, teens that do drink alcohol are more likely to
be binge drinkers.
