HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A statewide RED FLAG ALERT has been lifted by the South Carolina Forestry Commission, but a burning ban remains in effect in Horry County.
That burning ban will remain in effect until Horry County Fire Rescue deems it safe.
The statewide alert was lifted, Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins says, after "fire weather conditions have abated to include rain, higher
relative humidity values, decreased winds, and cooler temperatures. These
conditions also alleviate some of the strain on Forestry Commission equipment
and personnel."
Even when allowed, Hawkins says debris burning leads to nearly half of all wildfires in South Carolina.
