SCAM: Work from home offer too good to be true

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A new scam has surfaced in Horry County unlike any that the Horry County Police Department has previously battled.

The scammers, Horry County Police Department spokesman Sgt. Robert Kegler says, are using Craigslist to offer you the opportunity to make money from the comfort of your own home by intercepting packages and forwarding them to addresses in foreign countries.

They call themselves Hand to Hand, and claim to be based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The "company" sends a package to your home, which you then repackage and ship for them to an address, usually in Russia, Sgt. Kelger says. You are responsible for shipping costs with the promise of reimbursement and a salary for your hard work.

But Sgt. Kegler says after weeks of intercepting and shipping these packages - which have been bought with a stolen credit card - you are never paid, and you have lost all the money you paid on shipping.

"Detectives with the Horry County Police Department's Property Crimes Section are currently investigating cases involving this scam. They have discovered that Hand to Hand LLC does not exist at the address listed in Charlotte, North Carolina," Kelger explains.

If you have been contacted by an organization claiming to be Hand to Hand or feel you may be a victim of this or another scam, you are encouraged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
