Car crushin' employees charged with breach of trust

Posted: Updated:

MARION, SC (WMBF) - Several employees of a Marion County business are facing charges for "padding" tickets and giving customers more money they should have.

The investigation that landed those employees behind bars began at the request of the employer - Don's Car Crushing - on February 22. The Marion County Sheriff's Office found out that by "padding" tickets, or writing down more weight on the ticket that the actual weight of the load, one customer was receiving more money than they were supposed to get.

William Ammons, 21, 26-year-old Hoyt Richardson and 22-year-old George Gardner, all of Marion, were charged with breach of trust and criminal conspiracy. They were employees of the business where the crime took place.

Jason Smith, 32, of Marion and 30-year-old Ted Harper of Mullins were charged with obtaining property under false pretense and criminal conspiracy. Sheriff Mark Richardson says Smith and Harper were bringing stuff into Don's where the employees were padding the tickets.

All five have been released on bond. In all, the business lost $20,000, and investigators confirm the three employees did lose their jobs.
