MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – There is good news on the job front, employers added more jobs than expected last month, bringing the national unemployment rate to a four-year low.  Although the peak of the tourism season is still months away, some Grand Strand businesses are hiring more people because they are seeing a surprising increase in business now.

"It's picking up," said Justin Plyler, who manages a gift shop on Ocean Boulevard.  "We are very fortunate that March is the kick off for us, because we've been losing money up till now."

Plyler said he is seeing more and more people hitting the beach, so this week he hired three new workers to get ready for the busy summer months.

"We try to keep it as lean as possible but it's hard not to have extra people to take care of the increasing freight we get this time of year," added Plyler.

At the River Oaks Golf Plantation, Scott Taylor said there are a surprising number of golfers hitting the links at his course this year.

"We've definitely seen an increase in our spring bookings and are rounds are up in pre-bookings through the spring," Taylor said.  "I'm sure with this economy folks are doing a little bit better than they were before."

As the weather gets warmer and business picks up, Taylor said that means he will have to bring in more workers to meet customer demand.

"We can look at our tee sheets and see that we are consistently busy," added Taylor.  "The days are getting a little bit longer so I'm going to split shifts which will require more staff for that."
