NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC
(WMBF) – Over $17,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded this weekend at the 30th
National Shag Dance Championships, which will bring shag dancers of all skills
levels to North Myrtle Beach.
The annual dance competition
is being held at The Spanish Galleon in North Myrtle Beach this year, and features 43 of the nation's
best shag dance couples, organizers say.
On "Preservation
Night" Thursday, couples danced from a list of nearly 200 classic shag records,
and incorporated the required five steps into their dance.
Friday night, six
Masters couples from the shag dance Hall of Fame will be added to the
competition. On Saturday night, the Masters repeat and the top 21 do their last
of three records to determine the divisional winners, organizers say. After
that, an overall winner will be named.
Also on Saturday, the
best dancer working towards a college degree will be awarded the $5,000 Beth
Mitchell Memorial Scholarship."
