It was disturbing listening to the conversation between a 911 operator and an assisted living home nurse. The nurse refused to help a dying patient as the 911 operator tried unsuccessfully to get her to find someone else to assist.
Using the transcript of the 911 call as the only perspective it's easy to get upset at the nurse who failed to act. However, the family of the woman is satisfied with the care and response provided for the 87 year old woman who died.
The facility operator says all residents are aware of its no CPR policy and they agree to those terms. We have a lot of retirement facilities along the Grand Strand and in the Pee Dee, do they have similar procedures? Are your parents living in a community with a do-not-resuscitate policy?
There are many different decisions on how someone chooses to live out their final days. We should all use this incident to make sure our loved ones know our wishes. And before we criticize the nurse, let's consider the requests of the woman who died.
