SLED investigating after shot fired inside Midlands hospital

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

State Law Enforcement Division investigators are looking into an incident where a shot was fired inside Palmetto Health Richland Wednesday night.

According to a news release from the hospital, a Corrections Department inmate who was also a patient at the hospital managed to remove a weapon from a corrections officer who was guarding him.

During the scuffle, the corrections officer fired a single shot to help subdue the inmate and help fellow officers regain custody of him.

No one was injured in this incident.

The inmate was transported back to Kirkland Correctional Institute.

It is not the first time a gunshot has been fired in the Palmetto Health ER. In August 2008, a woman being treated at the hospital grabbed a gun from a nearby officer and fatally shot herself. That prompted a change to the type of holsters used by its officers.
