Florence businesses say road expansion brings parking concerns

FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) -  Proposed road improvements to South Cashua Drive are raising concerns with business owners along that portion of road.

Florence County officials say South Cashua Drive can no longer handle the high traffic demands which occur on the road daily. Florence County officials say the part of South Cashua that lies between 2nd loop Road and Knoll Road needs updates. Congestion and safety concerns are the driving force behind the renovations.

The plan, which has been more than five years in the making, will add three lanes, a median and a traffic light.

"I understand that improvements need to be made as cities grow. We are currently still in the county and we feel that the decision makers for the county and SCDOT really did not take into consideration as much as they should have," Scott Gilreath said.

Tonight, business owners met with SCDOT representatives and county members to try and give suggestions on how to improve the road without crippling their businesses.

Business owners said adding more lanes to the road will make it almost impossible for their customers to park. Some of those businesses think that if parking is an ordeal to customers, customers will no longer come into their businesses.

"If this building does get to stand, even if they do the construction and everything, people won't be able to get in and out of our business," said Pam Hyatt.

Right now, the project is in its right-of-way procedure, which means properties along South Cashua are being looked at to determine if their positioning on the road will affect the forward motion of the project.
