FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Investigators say two men posed as door to door vacuum cleaner salesmen in Lake City, Timmonsville and Florence and one allegedly stole valuables from the homeowner while the other distracted them.

William Leon Webb and Jason Teddy Carroll were each charged with four counts of entering a dwelling without breaking and two counts of grand larceny, according to a Florence County Sheriff's Office news release.

On March 11, each were charged with an additional grand larceny and entering a dwelling charge.

Investigators say on at least four occasions between February 14 and February 27, the men entered homes under the pretense that they were authorized salesmen, and while one suspect distracted the homeowner, the other allegedly stole valuables, primarily jewelry from another room.

"We urge everyone to be extremely cautious about letting door to door salesmen into your home," Sheriff Kenney Boone stated. "Under South Carolina law they must have a license and must show it to you upon demand. If they do not have or present a license, do not let them in and call law enforcement. While there are legitimate door to door salesmen, some, even if they have a license are only out to take advantage, or worse."

A conviction for entering a dwelling without breaking carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine, or both, officials stated. A conviction for grand larceny carries a sentence of up to 5 years in prison.

Anyone with knowledge or information regarding this or similar incidents is asked by authorities to contact Florence County Sheriff's Office at 843-665-2121, ext. 468.

Carroll is being held at the Florence County Detention Center on a $15,000 surety bond. Webb has been released with a $15,000 surety bond.
