Sporadic lane closures at the Backgate

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A quick drive on Highway 17 Bypass and drivers will likely notice all the orange cones approaching Hwy 707.

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) say crews are currently doing the prep work for the next major traffic shift and point out in the mean time, it could mean more lane closures for commuters.

In the next phase of construction, crews will move the work from street level to begin work on the ramps and overpass. Until the project moves into the next leg of construction, drivers can expect to see more lane closures.

Mike Barbee is with the SCDOT and is overseeing the backgate project. Barbee says many of the closures will be sporadic because the contractor will close and shift lanes as needed.

Drivers like Joe Miller who runs a restaurant near the backgate  has been caught off guard by minor changes lately. "The lanes have shifted over there a little bit in both ways actually and I see on Hwy 707 they've got it closed down to one lane," explained Miller.

"Last week I had to stop there for a little bit because they were working on the frontage road and on the bypass," explained Marilyn Hardee who commute through the backgate for work.

The bulk of the ongoing work consists of drainage work on Highway 707, base and asphalt work for the ramps. According to Barbee, the next big change will happen when crews shift the southbound lanes westward, scheduled to happen in mid to late April.
