FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A 26-year-old woman died this morning after the SUV she was driving crashed head-on into a tree in Florence, officials confirmed.
At about 5 a.m., Marquita Denise Murrell, from the Florence area, was traveling west on East Palmetto Street near Kemp Street when she left the roadway for an undetermined reason, said Tim Compton with the Florence City Police Department. She went over the curb, head-on into a tree, and died at the scene, he said.
Speed may have been a factor in the fatal collision, and it appears Murrell was not wearing a seatbelt, Compton added. The department's Traffic Unit and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the accident.
Florence County Coroner Keith Von Lutcken confirmed the victim's name, and said that next of kin have been informed.
