Hollywood Wax Museum at stand still

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The former location of the NASCAR Cafe and Grille has been sitting vacant for years on one of Myrtle Beach's prime property locations, and months ago, the developers with the Hollywood Wax Museum were looking to take over the location.

Representatives with the California-based company say they were notified the city of Myrtle Beach apparently decided the design of the building, featuring King Kong, the Hollywood sign, and Mountain Rushmore might not be right.

Aileen Stein, the Director of Corporate Communications, said she was surprised city leaders shot down the idea. According to Stein, the group chose Myrtle Beach because it was, "a wonderful market, a lovely destination and already a perfect match."

Myrtle Beach city spokesman Mark Kruea explains the City Appearance Board must not have liked all of what was presented, but the CAB hasn't made any official decision yet on the wax museum.

Stein said there is a possibility all can be worked out with the city and developers in the future to have a Hollywood Wax Museum in Myrtle.

Long-time resident Wendy Smith thinks adding another attraction is a good idea for locals and tourists who may be looking for another thing to spend their money on. "Sometimes I think Myrtle Beach goes halfway a lot of time, she says. "If you're going to have tourist attractions than you should go all the way. Make it fun and have fun things for everyone, even local people, to enjoy."

Michael Parichuk agrees with Smith. Parichuk is in town golfing with his friends from New Jersey. He and his friends admit attractions aren't something they would do on their trip down to the beach, but he would maybe visit a wax museum when the weather isn't good enough for golf. "I think more attractions would probably add to the economy," he says. "I think kids and families coming down here certainly utilize on it, especially in the summer and spring."
