Overturned 18-wheeler spills fuel after crash on I-95 in Florence

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Four people were transported with minor injuries and portions of Interstate 95 around mile marker 161 were blocked following a collision involving three passenger vehicles and an 18-wheeler in Florence.

Two men and two women were taken to Carolina's Hospital Systems by Florence County EMS. All of the patients suffered minor injuries, and were treated and released  sometime after noon.

West Florence Fire Department spokesperson Anthony Fox confirms that the collision occurred at mile marker 161 on I-95 at about 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Fox explains that an 18 wheeler flipped over and a fuel tank from that truck began to leak. Firefighters did secure the leak and contain the spill area, notifying DHEC of the spill.

Drivers told WMBF the section where the accident occurred is a danger to drive. Those drivers also say they have seen multiple accidents in that area.

A SCDOT spokesperson said the agency is has placed signs along mile marker 161 warning of the slippery conditions that occur in wet weather. That spokesperson also said the department re-paved that section of road to make traction easier for tires. Moving forward, the department has decided to reduce the speed limit to 60 M.P.H. in that area of roadway.

Emergency crews stayed on the scene well into the afternoon removing wreckage from the highway. Fox says the 18 wheeler was carrying 55 gallon drums, which were "empty and not hazardous."
