United States Attorney Bill Nettles stated today that Asia Shanniece Currie, age 19, and Cedric Willie Bellamy, age 26, both of Longs, South Carolina, pled guilty today in federal court in Florence, to conspiracy to make, possess, and pass counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 371.
United States District Judge R. Bryan Harwell of Florence accepted the pleas and will impose sentences after he has reviewed the presentence reports which will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.
Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing established that Currie and Bellamy were involved with Kamesha Dolly, previously convicted, in the making, possessing, and passing of counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes from July 2010 until March 2012, in the Lake City, South Carolina, area. Currie and Bellamy were arrested on March 19, 2012, while attempting to pass counterfeit currency in Lake City. A search was subsequently conducted at Dolly's residence and additional counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes were located.
Mr. Nettles stated the maximum penalty Currie and Bellamy can receive is a fine of $250,000.00 and/or imprisonment for 5 years, plus a special assessment of $100.00.
The case was investigated by the Lake City Police Department and agents of the United States Secret Service. Assistant United States Attorney William E. Day, II, of the Florence office handled the case.
