Local woman celebrates 103rd birthday Sunday

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - God, ice cream, and candy: the secret to a long life, according to one very special Myrtle Beach woman.

For Grace Elizabeth Stevens, her secret seems to be working: she celebrated her 103rd birthday today. The Pennsylvania native was surrounded by generations of her family at a local retirement community.

She was one of the first telephone operators, and folded parachutes during World War II. She remembers being a young girl standing at the train station and waving to the soldiers leaving for WWI.

The family says she loves parties, especially if there's dancing. At 103, she still has her humor and is always looking forward in life

"I've enjoyed living," she said. "I've had sorrow, but you have to deal with your sorrow and get over it and get back to regular living."

She spent the day joking around with her friends and family. She has outlived three husbands, and says, "you never know, there may just be a fourth!"

She has a lifetime of memories most of us can only imagine, her family says. Seeing technology develop through the years: she remembers her father's horse and carriage long before the first automobile, and her uncle had one of the very first radio receivers. Today, she used an iPhone to call loved ones.

Grace suffers from short-term memory loss, part of dementia her family says, but has wonderful long-term memories. Even though she may not remember all of today's party, it was still important for her family and friends to throw her a celebration. And while she was there, she greatly enjoyed it.

She sat and entertained a packed room with her stories and advice on life.

"Always go dancing, roller skating whenever you can. Don't be one of those people who sits and only focuses on the bad and always complains. Live your life!" she says.

The family says she still eats 2 quarts of ice cream every week.
