HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF)- A man who police believe beat another man with a baseball bat and stole his belongings led officers on a high-speed chase through Myrtle Beach early Sunday morning.
Just after midnight on Saturday, February 23, Horry County Police responded to a report of an assault at a home in the 800 block of Bay Street in Myrtle Beach, according to police reports. Officers arrived and located the victim, who was found lying outside the home, with swelling, lacerations and noticeable fractures to his head.
A witness told officers he lives at the home with the girlfriend of the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Daniel Elliott. He said he was laying in a back room when he heard a scuffle, and went to the front room to see Elliott wrestling with the victim. The witness went next door to get help, he told officers, but then realized he could call 911 from his cell phone, even though it was out of minutes.
By that time, the suspect was leaving in a vehicle, according to the witness' account. Officers arrived and asked the victim his identity, but he was unable to answer the questions clearly. He told officers that he was assaulted and robbed of his money and cell phone. Medics arrived and quickly transported the victim to a nearby hospital, and the witness provided a written statement to officers.
Police observed blood throughout the home, as well as two aluminum baseball bats, one of which is believed to have been used, the report states.
On Sunday morning, at about 4:30 a.m., North Myrtle Beach Police advised they were behind the suspect, who was driving a stolen vehicle, according to police reports.
A Horry County Police officer responded and deployed "stop sticks" at Highway 90 East and Highway 17, but the suspect drove around the sticks by driving north on the southbound lane, the report states.
Officers continued to chase the suspect around Cedar Creek Run until he lost control of the vehicle and veered into a street light. He was arrested without incident and identified as Daniel Elliott.
Elliott was charged with various traffic violations and booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Further charges are pending, officials confirmed.
