Phone scam: Police are coming to arrest you

Posted: Updated:

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Public Safety Department in North Myrtle Beach are warning you about a telephone scam from people posing as police investigators.

One resident who received a voice message from these scammers was called by name, stating they were with "Crime Investigations" or another law enforcement agency.

These callers claim that they have a "legal affidavit" or "legal case file" against you, with legal charges in force, and police are en route to arrest you.

After insisting on the sensitive and timely nature of the matter, the caller will then ask you to clear the matter by calling the direct number 980-263-2142, saying if you don't they will start procedures against you.

city spokesman Pat Dowling says, "If you call the phone number, you may be told to forward money in order to rectify the "case" they have against you."

North Myrtle Beach residents or visitors who receive such a call are advised to hang up and contact the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department at 280-5511.
