HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross is stepping to the plate to help families affected by house fires Wednesday.
The first of two fires was in Surfside Beach and three people lost their home. WMBF News was on the scene of that fire on Sea Breeze Drive where they believe flames sparked in the rear apartment.
Surfside Beach Fire, Garden City Fire and Midway Fire Rescue responded to douse the flames. One of the residents told our photographer he had lived there for 37 years.
Then a family of nine was displaced from their home in Kingstree.
After these losses Wednesday, the total rose to 382 residents who have lost their homes to fires since
July 1.
Comparatively, 152 house fires led to the displacement of 470
local residents in the past 12 months.
The difference in the two years
is significant – currently the Red Cross is assisting on the average 50 local
fire victims a month. Last year the average number was 30 victims a
month.
