Aynor PD gets K9 donation from Firehouse Subs

AYNOR, SC (WMBF) - Thanks to a donation from Firehouse Subs, the Aynor Police Department has a little more bark.

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded a new K-9 unit to Aynor Police Department Wednesday morning during a ceremony at their 38th Avenue location in Myrtle Beach.

Daisy is a Belgian Mallewah, a trained sense dog, and the first member of the new K-9 unit. She will be an important tool for officers in detection of narcotics.

Before Daisy, the department had to rely on K-9 units from the drug enforcement unit office and the Horry County Police Department. Police Chief Dwight David Thompson says even though the town is small, it still faces challenges with illegal drugs like any other community.

The money to buy Daisy and the K-9 friendly police vehicle came from a special grant from the local chapter of the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

Thompson says when Daisy is not patrolling the streets with her trained police handler she will visit schools with fellow officers to teach students about the dangers of drugs.

"The presence of a police officer can be intimidating. But the presence of an animal can open doors. We want to use to open doors with the children of the community. And when that door is open, then hopefully we can relay some messages. And it will stick in their minds and maybe one day in the future it will be beneficial to them and to the community," Thompson says.

The donation to Aynor Police Department includes Daisy, canine training, a vehicle insert and $15,000 towards the purchase of an emergency vehicle equipped with sirens and lights - totaling $26,450.
