LITTLE RIVER, SC (WMBF) – A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with criminal domestic violence after the alleged victim told police she used Facebook to contact her brother, because her cell phone was destroyed during a fight on Saturday night.

When Horry County Police officers responded to a report of criminal domestic violence at a home in Little River, the woman who answered the door had two black eyes, a visible shoeprint on her forehead, and a visible bald patch where hair had apparently been torn from her head, according to police reports.

After talking to the suspect taking a statement from the victim, police arrested Derek Jordan Sanford and charged him with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, due to the severity of the injuries sustained by the victim, and kidnapping, according to police reports. The report states they are boyfriend and girlfriend and currently live together.

During the physical fight, the victim told police that Sanford threw and broke her cell phone, and would not allow her to call anyone for help. After he fell asleep, she contacted her brother through Facebook, who then contacted police for help.

"It is evident that the Arrestee did commit the act of an assault and battery which resulted in serious bodily injury to the victim by hitting her repeatedly in the face, stomping her in the forehead with his foot/shoe, and ripping hair out of her head leaving a bald spot," the police report states. "The Victims [sic] eyes were both black and filled with blood and were nearly swollen completely shut. The Victim also stated that she was not allowed to call anybody for help, was trapped in her residence and was fearful that the Arrestee would cause her more bodily injury."

Sanford is currently being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a combined $60,000 bond.
