Civil rights anniversary celebrated on St. Helena Island

Posted: Updated:

ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Penn Center on the South Carolina coast is hosting events this week marking the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement.

The center on St. Helena Island holds a community singing event Sunday to promote the Gullah tradition of singing spirituals.

On Monday afternoon, there's a screening of the film "The Education Of Harvey Gantt." Gantt is an architect and former Charlotte, N.C., mayor who was the first black to attend Clemson University. Film producer Betsy Newman of South Carolina Educational Television will speak after the screening.

The Penn Center has served as a school for freed slaves, a Jim Crow-era industrial school and a retreat center for civil rights leaders. It now works to preserve the heritage of the Gullah people on the Southeast's sea islands.
